Before you watch "The Voice" Season 4 live or online for free, here is a recap of Monday's episode.
As EW.com notes, the first battle took place between Jessica Childress and Vedo on Team Usher. Childress impressed the judges with her booming voice during her audition, while Vedo showed off his personality with his spin on a Justin Bieber song. Vedo also came complete with a sob story, as he revealed during his audition that his mother had just months to live.
By the time the battles rolled around, Vedo's mother had passed away. But, he wanted to make her proud, and he did just that with his and Childress' take on "Locked Out Of Heaven." The judges praised the way the duo worked together on the song, but Usher declared Vedo the victor in the battle. Shockingly, none of the judges chose to steal Childress, who was one of the early favorites to make the finals on "The Voice" Season 4.
John Kubicek of BuddyTV was particularly shocked by the decision, noting that Childress was much better than Vedo. Michael Slezak of TVLine was also outraged, arguing that both she and Patrick Dodd were robbed of spots in the battle rounds. Dodd, a member of Adam Levine's team, was also not stolen after losing his battle to folk duo Midas Whale.
Still, the judges did make some smart strategic decisions during Monday night's episode of "The Voice" Season 4. Shakira had a tough choice between Monique Abbadie and Luke Edgemon. The latter was a particular revelation during his battle, with several coaches praising his improvement from his audition. Shakira then smartly picked Abbadie as the winner, rightfully assuming that one of the other coaches would steal him. Usher fought valiantly, but ultimately Edgemon chose two-time winner Blake Shelton as his coach.
Shelton, meanwhile, continued to bolster his squad when teenager Savannah Berry beat out Jacqui Sandell. Both did admirably during their country-themed duet, but Berry's clear tone gave her the edge. Shelton also clearly preferred her style of music, as his team on "The Voice" Season 4 is primarily made up of country artists.
